Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof." But they said, "Stand back!" And they said, "This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them." Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door.
Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it." So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, "Up! Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city." But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. And as they brought them out, one said, "Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away." And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords. Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there--is it not a little one?--and my life will be saved!" The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.
Now Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters. And the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father." So they made their father drink wine that night. fascinate me endlessly, but Genesis is like hot buttered banana bread in front of Grandpa’s fireplace on a January evening.
I really love listening to this podcast- I hope I can stick to it faithfully throughout the whole year. I want.. transfornmation in my life. It feels like I’ve been hovering between one old dried husk of self and struggling in a coccoon to grow wings. Thank God too for the simple illustrations of critters, because really, I don’t like struggling to describe it in city-slicker terms. ‘Course, you could say I feel like I’ve been struggling to get miles down a slushy, rutty snow road in a car without heating.
Being stuck in cycles of self-gratifying behavior like cybersex (or alcohol, or bad eating habits or.. It goes on, doesn’t it?) is a drag! I wrote about it last time I posted.
But lessee.. Brian today brought up the fact that when we read Lot’s story and of Soddom and Gamorrah we are shocked. Homosexual rape, daughters meant to be thrown to the rapists to save the guests, the destruction of five cities by an angry God, daughters getting their father drunk and raping him to get children- it’s horrific, isn’t it?
We get disgusted towards God. Don’t we? Our natural reaction is how the heck could You, supposedly all-powerful and all-wise and all-knowing, let that €#/&%! happen?!
Oh yes, indeed, and don’t deny it! God intervened to destroy the cities because of how many folk had cried out to Him against all the injustice, evils and horror they’d wreaked. Keep in mind, they wanted to violate two guests of their town!
God respects free will. He does not force anyone to anything, because His desire is to romance his creations back into the heart-thumping wonderful relationship with Him they were created for. Fred Stoeker wrote in his book, Tactics:
” Then Greg paused for a moment before making a simple statement that blew me away. “The truth is, all God wants is to put His arm around you and have a steak with you.” Instantly God’s revelation crashed through my spirit like a meteor.
” God wants to put his arm around me and cut into a juicy steak with me? I know Greg’s word picture sounded absurdly simple, but when his words mixed with God’s power in my spirit, years of pain, agony and frustration over my dad crumbled into dust. Unlike my father down here, my heavenly Father already saw me as His son. I didn’t have to prove myself. I had real value. He didn’t care a thing about what I achieved or what I did or if I was successful. All He wanted was a chance to sit down with me, wrap His arm around me, and cut into a barbecued steak with me!”
You know, I had trouble relating to my father too, but you know, even more my mother. And the things God has done with her are just.. Mindsweeping. Or Minesweeping? She inspired me to push into the struggle to put off sexual sin, and told me about her struggle to stop illicit relationships for years. She’s been forging the road a lot longer than me, and you know what she said? She’s never looked back, and it’s brought her a lot of peace.
Even masturbation, which everybody is all quiet on, because doctors and the internet and scientists and even a lot of christians will say there’s nothing wrong with. You know, my grandma said it’d give you eye problems, but I betcha she didn’t have a christian perspective on it so she could give a satisfying, persuasive and candid answer on it. Few do, ‘cuz after all, few know how to talk about it! And I believe candid answers are kinder and wiser than silence from a mother or father.
Mmmhh, Lot and Soddom.
God respects free will. Do you know how deep that goes? Even to follow Him daily, a person that longs to follow Him must invite the good father into his decisions, finances, and the troubles of his heart.
Proverbs 2:16-19 [show] So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words,
who forsakes the companion of her youth
and forgets the covenant of her God;
for her house sinks down to death,
and her paths to the departed;
none who go to her come back,
nor do they regain the paths of life. sums up sweetly how I feel when I loose interest in an online roleplay partner. I feel.. horrible, like I am betraying yet another person who had a little hope in me.
16 It will save you also from the adulteress,
from the wayward wife with her seductive words,17 who has left the partner of her youth
and ignored the covenant she made before God.
How awful is that?! ‘Left the partner of her youth’. Given up upon the relationship that made her heart jump joyfully, grown bored with it, and seasonally tosses aside folk like to a wastebin.
I want to be of more integrity and worth than that, and for the words I speak to echo the desires of my heart. I want the people I meet to be free of sorrows, of the same sort that have burdened me in times past.
So I’m doing an online course. ‘Way of purity‘, it’s called, and it hits the nail on the head in the very first day of the bible-study-like course:
The first teaching of this course is that we must have God’s glory as our motive for finding freedom from impurity. Most people have their own glory as the motive for finding freedom; they want to get free in order to feel better about themselves, save their marriage, or be more productive at work. This is actually self-worship, which should have no place in the heart of the Christian who professes to worship God. God does all things for His own glory (Psalm 21:5 [show] His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
During my years of slavery to pornography, I would try one method after another, one book or support group after another, always seeking the knowledge which would free me. I wanted to feel better; I wanted others to see me as a spiritual giant; I wanted to have a better self-image. But looking back, I see that these motives were all wrong: it was all about me. It was for my own glory, and that’s why it never lasted.
And yet again I digress. We blame God in our own ideas of fair and unfair and fail to see the real points- God didn’t choose to have his angels raped. The men of Sodom wanted to do that. Lot chose himself to offer his daughters to silence the rapists- he was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and had compromised to begin with by choosing to settle in a city full of evil. He’d compromised, saying to himself it was a good place to live!
In that day it was expected to treat guests higher than family while being a host. Women were second-class citizens above slaves, but that does not mean that even servants and slaves were not loved by some. Lot’s future sons-in-law thought he was joking about his warning, they chose to stay and be destroyed by the destruction God wrought. Lot’s wife chose to look back, and in turn betrayed her daughters, because she was not there to guide them right later. Lot and his wife had chosen, in either negligence or ignorance, not to raise their children according to the covenant God had made with Abraham, his brother, and the girls chose to rape their father rather than end the family line in what they thought what was the end of the world. They’d just lost their fiancees and were living in a cave!
How very easy it is to forget- God knows each of our needs ahead of time and provides for them even before the thought of then occurs to us.
